It's only the beginning

1. How has your view of social software changed since starting the course?

I’ve always recognized the potential educational use of social software since being exposed to various types through previous classes and professional development trainings.  However, my biggest concern was staff buy-in and the viability of the software.  In the setting where I work, most of the teachers are more than willing to learn of the available technology.  However, the problem is in the implementation.  This class has strengthened my view regarding the role of social software in education in the 21st century.  It has also given me the resolve to continue to work with administrators and teachers in finding practical and intuitive ways to implement the use of these tools in the classroom and particularly in the library.

2. What technology did you find most interesting for your personal use? What technology did you think would be most useful professionally?

One of my favorite sites is TripAdvisor.com, since my husband and I love to travel.  We’ve benefitted much from the site, especially the user reviews and the online forums.  I mentioned using the site to my friend, and he said that he also uses it and that I should add him as a contact.  I’ve never really thought about creating an account. I just take what I need, but I am now starting to think it that it would actually be great to network with other travelers and give back to the community by posting my own reviews.

So much of the web 2.0 tools that we’ve discussed in class, I can definitely find their places in the classroom and the library.  Just last Friday, I finally convinced my principal to start a blog.  When we first discussed blogging and how to publish blog posts (I even showed her blogs by other principals), she seemed hesitant as she felt she might not have the time to blog regularly.  However, she has agreed to try it (under the condition that I would support her).  I am also starting to use Wikis as subject guides.  Each of our grade level focuses on a particular area of the world (i.e. Middle East, Oceania, etc.) and we are going to create a wiki for each of those parts of the world that teachers and students can add to.  Hopefully, it will grow from year to year.

3. What surprised you during the course?

While it was mentioned early on that others can view this site, I was actually surprised that someone from outside the class responded to a classmate's blog regarding their services and offered some explanation.

4. What suggestions do you have for improving the learning activities (exercises, assignments, blog posts, readings, examples, etc.)?

I think the course content was put together very well.

5. How did your experience using Drupal differ from your experience in Blackboard classes (or classes using other traditional course management systems)?

I like the openess of the class, though it made me a bit cautious about my comments regarding my workplace since this site can be found using Google.

6. Looking back, how would you sum up your experience?

This class was a wonderful learning experience.  I particularly enjoyed the interaction within the class.  Thank you everyone.
