1. How has your view of social software changed since starting the course?
I went back and read my first posting for comparison from my initial perceptions. Interestingly, my perceptions regarding social software remain the same. For me, it is all about connecting people, encouraging communication, and enhancing collaboration. It was empowering to produce screen casts, podcasts, and having my own news system alert through Yahoo Pipes!. Another great accomplishment has been the confidence gained actively participating in the blogosphere. It has been a great starting point and as many of my classmates have also noted, I would love to have a second portion or an advanced class to build upon what I learned this fall. The group project was a terrific experience which not only exposed us to real work circumstances, but also provided for an opportunity to develop bonds among my peers. We shared understanding, support, and concerns while also having fun.
2. What technology did you find most interesting for your personal use? What technology did you think would be most useful professionally?
The RSS feeds and alert systems were the most valuable technology tools for me. They allow for users to effortlessly keep up with the news at both personal and professional levels. Professionally, RSS feeds, screen casts for tutorials, and blogs are the technologies I considered the most useful. These three technologies allow for convenient updates, interactive learning, and actively finding my personal voice.
3. What surprised you during the course?
I was surprised how much I enjoyed every single accomplishment while having so much fun in the process. Looking forward to returning to hear my classmates’ voices and opinions, and also being able to complete all ten exercises!
4. What suggestions do you have for improving the learning activities (exercises, assignments, blog posts, readings, examples, etc.)?
I think the course is very well designed and balanced: the readings support the hands on activities, while the weekly posting allowed for digesting the technology and gaining insights. Since I’m a visual learner, it would have been terrific to have some screencasts on how to edit a wiki. This is the only technology I still find somewhat arid.
5. How did your experience using Drupal differ from your experience in Blackboard classes (or classes using other traditional course management systems)? I liked the interactive features and its open format better than Blackboard. I need to admit I’m still a little bit uncomfortable about the openness though, for example, my mother who started using computers not long ago decided to “Google my name” and found our class blog. Needless to say that was a surprise but it is absolutely worthwhile.
6. Looking back, how would you sum up your experience?
This experience helped me develop skills which I believe will better position myself in the library work force. It also helped me recognize and understand how powerful networking is.
