Five Weeks: Final Proposal
Five Weeks to a Social Library: Final Project Proposal Beaufort County
Beaufort County Library System is already employing the use of several social software tools, thus I crafted a proposal that introduces these tools to the ENTIRE staff via our Intranet pages and & encourages them to begin to explore and use them on a daily basis.
I. Beaufort County Library Intranet Wiki
A. Use Beaufort Library 2.0 intranet wiki pages (built during this course) to build a BCL tutorial that takes staff step-by-step through social software tools learned in Five Weeks to a Social Library.
B. Create timeframe appropriate for staff to comfortably proceed through tutorial.
C. Get approval for a staff “reward” to offer as incentive to complete the tutorials.
D. Have intranet wiki pages tested for errors.
II. Announce the Wiki Pages: Staff Development Day April 11th
A. Staff Development Day already includes introductions in small groups to various social software tools. In addition to this, I will prepare flyers and make an official announcement of the BCL 2.0 Tutorial that staff may use for the program.
B. Kick off the event with the announcement of the “reward” to be received upon the completion of the BCL 2.0 Tutorial. (It won’t end there; we hope to encourage staff to keep participating.)
III. How Will This Serve Our Library/Patrons?
A. First, it will encourage ownership of the tools we are currently using, i.e. blogs, wiki’s, IM throughout our staff so as to encourage active participation, new ideas, and new ways of connecting with patrons alike.
B. Second, this cross training will increase the library staff’s knowledge of alternative ways to reach patrons, while enabling them to assist patrons with new ways of utilizing our resources or helping them with issues they may have with such software.
IV. Evidence This Technology is Useful (Ubiquitous PLCMC: )
A. We are already reaching patrons via IM, Blogs and De.licio.us accounts as evidenced by our staff.
B. We have seen the growing Virtual culture that engages a whole new user. See: Virtual Transformations.
C. We are seeing new conversations/communities build around Library services that utilize social software tools like My Space.
D. We are bringing the people to us via social software by politely getting in our end-user’s face with blogs for Homework Help, Book Clubs, Library Events, and Technology. Creating relevance! Wiki’s For Library Instruction, Information and Events. Videos and Pictures of Libraries, staff, & patrons all engaged in social activities at their libraries and published with social software like Flickr or YouTube.
V. Roadblocks/ Overcome
A. Staff reluctance/ Resistance/Non-interest (Prizes and recognition go a long way to ending this.)
B. Time (Work with Managers to carve this out of the daily work log.)
C. Interest/ MONEY…for the prizes silly :) (Promotion, good marketing, and fundraising will help.)
VI. Suggestions for Upgrades/Maintenance of Current Social Software Used
A. At this point, we would like to host our own blogs, wiki’s etc. So an inevitable migration to software that supports this move would need to happen, along with additional servers. We have bandied about the idea of “owning” an island on 2nd Life (virtual branch) to host these things (long way off :) Currently we use Blogger, which I would move to Wordpress, and PBwiki which I would move to Media Wiki when we have server support. We also use Meebo for IM, and so far fantastic.

Sharing the learning is
Sharing the learning is essential; great proposal! Bringing all the staff onboard may perhaps provide the variety of perspectives and ideas essential to making a social software initiative work. Good luck!
What a great idea! I might
What a great idea! I might have to do a (shortened) version of your idea to have online tutorials based on what we learned in this class. Thanks!
You could host your own 5
You could host your own 5 Weeks! (But I would spread it out more.) I think you'd be a fab Web 2.0 hostess. And I'm feeling your pain on the getting server space. I have (basically) begged for hosting in my proposal. I should probably think of alternatives to add in there. Do you think you will set up a Drupal situation for you class?
Thanks Suzanne :) I might
Thanks Suzanne :) I might use Drupal, but our Intranet is via Microsoft Sharepoint and it can host chats, RSS and discussion boards so I will have to see.

Rachel, I, too, was going to
Rachel,
I, too, was going to introduce what I had learned during this course to the reference staff. Maybe I should invite all staff? I liked what you said about "owning the tools we use". I think this is true; we must feel confident and strong when conquering new things. And the free prizes are excellent!!

Rachel, Great. This is a
Rachel,
Great. This is a plan that I think has the potential to be wonderful. I want to plan something similar for MPOW.
I was wondering if you were going to embed tutorials that were like screencasts or if you planned on using more screen shots with captions. Each require their own storage and editing. If you do not already have good software for this, you could add this consideration as part of your expense.
Thank you for your sense of humor in our group. World domination is not just a dream. (no capes)
Thanks! I planned on
Thanks! I planned on embedding the tutorials. I am using Microsoft Sharepoint (our Intranet) for this wiki and it can host discussions, provide RSS as well as be a Blogging platform. But it is much easier to embed these than to do to many screen shots etc. But, I will work with both! Have u used sharepoint?

Rachel, Great ideas! I'm not
Rachel,
Great ideas! I'm not the first to say this, but I was going to do an outline of the various tools we learned to share with other staff. I am embarrassed to admit that, even after almost completing the course, I didn't considering using one of the TOOLS to share the information! A wiki for that purpose sounds great, and is certainly no harder than putting together an old-fashioned report. I also love the idea of incentives and rewards.
Hey Rachel, could you share
Hey Rachel, could you share that wiki once it's created? This thought has crossed my mind as well as I, too, am preparing to share what I've learned with the rest of the staff. You're absolutely right - why not actually use one of the tools in the process. Brilliant! Good luck!
I will, in fact you should
I will, in fact you should be able to see it from my FLickr account: beaufortrefdesk

Rachel, What a novel
Rachel,
What a novel idea--using a wiki to share what you learned in this course with your colleagues. I agree with Linda that instead of inventing the wheel, I'd like to see what you've done for ideas on how to relay the info I learned in this course to staff. Thanks for being willing to share. I'm sure your co-workese will be thrilled and thankful to have you share your new-found knowledge with them.
Good luck!

It looks like you've thought
It looks like you've thought a lot about how to get the staff on board with your plan, which is good. I like how well you've thought about how to overcome the roadblocks and since you are that should help.
